Plant turnarounds are all about getting the most accomplished in the least amount of time. Downtime is expensive often costing plants hundreds of thousands of dollars a day in lost production. This expense means that a plant turnaround must be strategically planned to accomplish all goals within a tight time frame.
Plant Turnaround Goals
Plant turnaround goals obviously vary according to the condition of the facility and future plans for the plant. That said, every plant turnaround aims to increase the safety, efficiency, reliability of operations. That’s why it’s essential to pay attention to even the smallest components such as pressure gauges during plant turnarounds.
Why? Because equipment is often changed out or updated when there’s a shutdown. This means that the type of gauges you were using prior to the shutdown may no longer be appropriate for the application. If the right pressure gauges aren’t in place, plant safety and reliability are at risk. A misapplied gauge can fail and lead to incidents such as media leaks and even fires, which can cause costly unplanned downtime. But more importantly, without the right instruments in place, you have no warning of issues that may be looming in your process so you can’t correct them before a serious problem develops.
